HUNTSVILLE, Ontario, July 12, 2009 —With less than a year to go, Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka, reflected on the positive impact the G8 Summit will have on the Huntsville area.
“In one year, our region will be host to the world’s leaders, delegates, invited nations, and the media,” said Tony. “The projects I am announcing today will ensure that Parry-Sound Muskoka is seen at our best.”
The Government of Canada has come to the table with a real support in the form of a $50-million G8 Legacy Fund which fill fund a number of great, local projects to help prepare Huntsville for the G8 Summit. These projects will create jobs now, and have a lasting, long-term benefit on our communities.
Of particular significance is the G8 Summit Centre expansion which has received $20-million from the Government of Canada in addition to the $50-million coming from the G8 Legacy Fund. This money will provide for a beautiful facility which will later be used by the University of Waterloo for research.
This money shows a real commitment by the Government of Canada to make this Summit a success for Huntsville. The 2010 G8 Summit will generate significant economic benefits for the region and the province, and will be an exceptional opportunity for Canada and Huntsville to shine on the world stage.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world’s leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is an opportunity for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
