PARRY SOUND — An official ceremony today marked the completion of upgrades to water and wastewater infrastructure in Parry Sound. The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka and Minister of Industry; Lou Rinaldi, Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and Wilf Sabourin, Deputy Mayor of the Town of Parry Sound, are pleased to see this important Canada-Ontario Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (COMRIF) project reach completion.
Work on the project involved replacing cast iron watermains and sanitary and wastewater pipes along Gibson Street. These replacements will reduce infiltration into the collection system, reduce operating costs at pumping stations and the wastewater treatment plant, and help to maintain water quality in the Georgian Bay area.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $1,150,088 to the project. The Town of Parry Sound committed the balance of the project’s total eligible cost of $3,450,025.
“Our government is working with our local communities to ensure they have the infrastructure they need to build strong and prosperous communities,” said Minister Clement. “These upgrades enhance the efficiency of the municipal water and wastewater systems, resulting in lower operating costs.”
“This water and wastewater project will help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors within this community,” said PA Rinaldi. “Through this funding Parry Sound will have safe and reliable water sources for years to come.”
“An efficient water and wastewater system is critical to the health and safety of our community,” said Deputy Mayor Sabourin. “These upgrades will improve our water quality, provide greater access for schools and area residents and reduce energy and maintenance costs.”
Under the COMRIF program, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to respond to local needs through infrastructure upgrades providing clean, safe drinking water, better sewage systems, improved waste management processes, safer local roads and bridges, as well as other health and safety priorities.
