PARRY SOUND — An official ceremony today marked the completion of waste management upgrades at the McDougall landfill site. The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka and Minister of Industry; Lou Rinaldi, Parliamentary Assistant to the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and Dale Robinson, Mayor of the Municipality of McDougall, are pleased to see this important project reach completion.
Work on this project included the expansion of the McDougall landfill site capacity to accommodate a higher volume of waste, the design and construction of an on-site groundwater treatment plant that can process 130,000 litres a day, as well as the development of a surface and ground water monitoring program for quality control purposes. This will enable the municipality to better control its waste management needs over the next 25 years.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $2,526,639 to the project. The Municipality of McDougall committed the balance of the project’s total eligible cost of $7,579,917.
“The completion of this work ensures that residents of our community will benefit from environmentally sound and effective waste disposal services,” said Minister Clement. “Our government is committed to upgrading the essential infrastructure in our communities; from waste management to roads and recreation centres, we are helping our communities build for the future.”
“Investments in waste management help ensure that all communities within Ontario have safe facilities that protect their residents and our environment,” said PA Rinaldi.
“These upgrades demonstrate that a healthy environment and healthy residents are among our top priorities,” said Mayor Robinson. “This project reflects a critical waste disposal solution for McDougall residents, six other area municipalities and over 1,000 businesses in the West Parry Sound District.”
Under the COMRIF program, the governments of Canada and Ontario are working together with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario and local partners to respond to local needs through infrastructure upgrades providing clean, safe drinking water, better sewage systems, improved waste management processes, safer local roads and bridges, as well as other health and safety priorities.
