CANADA MAKES AN IMPORTANT INVESTMENT IN MUSKOKA IN PREPARATION FOR THE 2010 G8 SUMMIT
OTTAWA, April 15, 2009 — The District Municipality of Muskoka, Ontario, will host the 2010 G8 Summit next summer. Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound–Muskoka, announced that the Government of Canada will provide $1.2 million to support the upgrading of street lighting and furniture in Gravenhurst, Ontario, in preparation for the Summit.
“For three days, delegates and media from around the world will be welcomed to Muskoka. Our government is committed to helping our local communities prepare to host this prestigious event,” said Minister Clement. “Today’s announcement lives up to that commitment. I know the local community will benefit from these upgrades for generations to come.”
The upcoming 2010 G8 Summit will provide short- and long-term economic benefits for the region and the province, and will be an exceptional opportunity for Muskoka to showcase its values and interests on the world stage.
The Government of Canada will support these projects by way of the $50-million G8 Infrastructure Fund announced on February 6, 2009. Other projects supported by this initiative include the creation of a G8 Centre in Huntsville, Ontario, and upgrades to the North Bay Airport Facility.
The G8 is an informal group of eight of the world’s leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to urgent challenges facing the world.
