HUNTSVILLE, Ontario, February 27, 2009 — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today welcomed delegates at the Futures Symposium IV, hosted by the Muskoka Community Futures Development Corporation.
During his opening remarks, Minister Clement announced that FedNor is beginning a review of regional tourism opportunities associated with hosting the G8 Summit in 2010 that will help the area put its best foot forward. The report, which will be completed by the end of March, will outline criteria to evaluate and respond to the demand for G8 related tourism projects.
All of Parry Sound-Muskoka will benefit from the significant economic activity associated with hosting several thousand guests including heads of state, foreign officials, security officers and media. The 2002 G8 Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta generated millions of dollars for the regional economy.
“Our government recognizes the tremendous economic benefit of tourism in the Parry Sound–Muskoka region,” said Minister Clement. “This independent review will lay the groundwork for local stakeholders to take full advantage of the many short and long-term tourism opportunities presented by the G8 Summit in 2010.”
“We’re hopeful that international media attending the G8 Summit will introduce millions of potential tourists to the natural beauty of the Muskoka region,” Clement added. “This review will help us target our investments and integrate them with our existing tourism development strategies.”
Support for this approach corresponds with the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to strengthen Northern communities. By supporting people, communities and business through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
