Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound – Muskoka has pledged his support for the recent legislation that will eliminate pardons for serious criminal offences.
"It's not in the government’s interest to be in the forgiveness business," said Clement. "The current system of pardons implies that what the person did is somehow Okay, or is forgiven or that the harm done has somehow disappeared. Our government disagrees with this process."
MP Tony Clement joins the thousands of Canadians and victims’ advocates that support the legislation, which would eliminate the concept of a “pardon” and instate the harder-to-attain “record suspension” in its place. It was just recently that Canadians learned that Graham James, a convicted sexual offender, received a pardon. Without quick action from Parliament, the Conservative government is concerned that other offenders will receive the same forgiveness.
While the opposition continues to stand behind convicted offenders, the Conservative Government is standing up for the interests of law-abiding Canadians and their families and victims of crime.
