Statement from the Honourable Tony Clement, MP for Parry Sound – Muskoka on Liberal Bill C-428
Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla introduced legislation aimed at changing the federal Old Age Security Act. Her Bill, C-428, would allow new immigrants over the age of 65 to claim full old age pensions almost immediately after coming to Canada.
“It has quickly become apparent that the residents of Parry Sound-Muskoka have serious concerns about this Liberal legislation. I want to assure all residents of the riding that I do not support this Bill , nor does the Conservative Party of Canada.
Currently, to qualify for OAS, there is a 10 year residency requirement after age 18. If this is met, eligible Canadians can start receiving benefits at age 65.
The Conservative government believes that this 10 year requirement period strikes an appropriate balance between an individual’s contribution to Canadian society and the economy and therefore should be able to receive benefits at age 65.
We believe that it is fair and reasonable for a person to live in Canada for a minimum period of time before being granted the right to a lifelong public benefit. Our government believes in a fair and responsible approach to providing benefits to seniors and that’s what we are doing.
The Conservative government maintains that this Liberal proposal at a cost of over $700 million, is costly and irresponsible and would burden Canadian taxpayers.
I would like to ensure all residents of Parry Sound – Muskoka that I will be voting against Liberal Bill C-428.”
