MP Tony Clement helps muskoka youth launch the 2010 model G8 youth summit in Gravenhurst
GRAVENHURST, Ontario — The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka, today joined Grade 11 and 12 students from around the region in launching the Model G8 youth summit.
“It’s incredible to see how young people in the area have taken on this challenge of discussing some of the world’s top issues,” said Minister Clement. “I’m more confident than ever that Canada’s future is in good hands.”
Each of the G8 nations, as well as two international organizations, was represented by a delegation of 12 students from local schools. The youth delegates explored and discussed the same political, social and economic issues that official delegations from countries around the world will examine during the 2010 G8 Leaders’ Summit, taking place in Huntsville, Ontario June 25-26, 2010.
Minister Clement also announced the winners of the G8 art and multimedia competitions. Kindergarten to Grade 5 students in the Parry Sound-Muskoka region were asked to draw a poster to introduce world leaders to “their Muskoka” for the art competition. The multimedia competition was aimed at Grade 6 to Grade 10 students to use the medium of their choice to convey their ideas about pressing issues facing youth.
The G8 is composed of eight of the world’s leading economic powers: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The annual summit is a chance for the leaders of the G8 countries to meet face to face and develop common approaches to current challenges facing the world.
