ony Clement and Conservative Government Deliver Employment Insurance Special Benefits for the Self Employed
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound – Muskoka is pleased to announce self-employed Canadians can now apply to receive Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits, which include maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits.
“This is just one more example of our Conservative government delivering on a campaign promise to help self-employed Canadians who are so important to our economy” said MP Clement. “We believe Canadians should not have choose between their family and business responsibilities, and that is why we are giving self-employed Canadians the option to be eligible for EI benefits”.
Self-employed Canadians will be able to voluntarily opt into the EI program effective today, and those who register on or before April 1, 2010, will be able to collect benefits as early as January 1, 2011.
Self-employed Canadians include small business owners, farmers, construction workers, professionals, and those who own a home business, among many others.
Extending access to special benefits for these hard working Canadians is the fair and right thing to do. It is yet another way the Conservative Government is supporting families and represents one of the most significant enhancements to the EI program in the last decade.
