Huntsville, Ontario – Today, Tony Clement M.P. for Parry Sound – Muskoka and the Minister of Industry made the following statement regarding the Government of Canada’s measures and information on the H1N1 virus.
“Over the past days and weeks many of us have heard news and information about the H1N1 flu virus. For many it has been difficult to filter the facts you need from the misinformation out there. As your elected representative, I would like to assure everyone that as new, credible information becomes available the public is being informed immediately by our provincial and federal public health authorities.
“In light of the situation, it is important you understand who is at risk, and how to protect and prepare ourselves for dealing with the H1N1 virus. Canadians under the age of 6 and older than age 69, pregnant women, or those with chronic conditions are the highest risk groups. There will be vaccine for everyone who wishes it, but if you are in generally good health please allow a priority for those at higher risk in these early days.”
To prevent contracting the flu the Public Health Agency of Canada advises to:
- Wash hands often with soap and warm water, or use hand sanitizer.
- Keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.
- Cough and sneeze into your arm, not your hand. If you use a tissue, dispose of it and wash your hands.
- Keep common surface areas clean and disinfected.
- Eat healthy and stay physically active to keep your immune system strong.
- Get your immunization, with respect the higher risk groups getting their shots first.
- Should you contract the flu, stay home and try not to expose others.
- If you experience even mild flu symptoms that persist talk to your health care provider.
“I can’t emphasize enough that getting vaccinated is a safe and effective way to protect yourself and others against the H1N1 flu virus. Meanwhile, our government’s priority is to ensure that everyone is informed and prepared for any additional developments on this virus. If you would like any more information, please check
